Diesel Country is a biodiesel manufacturing company founded by Tshepo Motshumi and started operating out of need to capitalise on an existing technology which converts waste into usable fuel. Diesel Country started off with manufacturing biodiesel for the agricultural sector because in terms of quality has lower entry requirements (around 500ppm); which is easier to produce. They were to surpass that by producing fuel quality of around 50-10 ppm.
The challenges that Diesel Country faced were mainly concentrated around the loss of revenue due to production and quality management; were bad fuel batches had to be discarded. The other challenges was due to lack of awareness around the business and the particular industry.
The Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) assisted the business by getting them an exhibition stand for their products at the Manufacturing Indaba in June 2018. From this exposure they made sales to the amount of R2.2-million and met with a potential investor. The business currently employs six full time employees and seven temporary workers, and turns over between R180 000 to R320 000 a month.
